The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Among Music Fans

It has been two decades since Guitar Hero first launched in North America, offering players everywhere the tools to feel like a rock star. Not literally, but try convincing someone who has nailed the epic four-minute instrumental break before an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Developed by the developers, Guitar Hero provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues moving along the display in time with the music. Every sequence corresponded to particular chords, producing the sensation of a genuine live show.

The studio previously tried its hand with rhythm games before partnering with RedOctane, later purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they established the foundations for an unlikely massively profitable franchise which made a remarkable impact for many of the artists featured, introducing classic groups to a new generation of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – even though the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music since the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Even with the publishing rights alone, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. But once the game became a hit, and record sales and radio play were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He adds: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many parents reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their children to the songs they adored. It became an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish group one featured act had Never Too Late on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist recalls the way the game revived classic rock back into vogue: “The game offered a bigger, new demographic. Typically this had been seen as outdated material, however once it got included in the title young people were finding it, abruptly it was cool. That legitimised it, and got rid of the ‘dad rock’ label. It gave all our music a new life.”

In 2008, the band's first record was still not available in the US, meaning Guitar Hero served as a primary platform for exposure for the band during their US tour opening for AC/DC. “The roadies were playing the song during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles and Lasting Impact

Music's heavyweight names soon capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in specialized game editions centered around each band’s catalogue and associated stories, visuals and legendary status. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the group greater revenue compared to their records. It moved more than half a million units in its first week, and demand for Aerosmith’s music saw an increase of up to 40% at a time when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero still motivates nimble-fingered dedication among its fans. Earlier this year, an online personality achieved a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – a notoriously difficult anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics and extensive customisation options. This track is difficult even in expert mode, let alone performed at double speed and without missing a single one of the thousands of cues. They claimed requiring nine months to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, fantasy thing. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you ought to use a real gun and enlist,” says musician the artist.

The band had already wrapped up a successful tour before their hit appeared on Guitar Hero III, yet he explains it turned them into a household name. “I recall our distributors calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we performed right ahead of top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure via the game was so immense that it has threatened to eclipsing all other the band has done. Last year, the track featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I felt otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got their own path in music and I’m glad we played a role of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier marketing, whether it’s for cars, clothes or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it inspires a desire. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what we were trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders believed humans have a natural human desire to make music, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, featuring derivative titles such as DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest on peripherals waned, except for a brief comeback several years later.

Titles like Clone Hero and newer releases have maintained the scene active, and there’s expectations of something from the founders in development. Recently formed developers has begun production on its debut rhythm-based title. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game following the classic?

“We thought such titles might become similar to sports games where you can update every year,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant new music that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason why it can’t continue with new generations.”
