The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation about The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
